Mo Ibrahim Foundation MSc scholarship in Governance and State-building

The University of Birmingham is pleased to announce an exciting opportunity to undertake the MSc in Governance and State-building, followed by a six-month internship at the International Development Department and six months with the Mo Ibrahim Foundation in London with a full scholarship.

The entry requirements consist of:

• 1st class Honours degree or equivalent from an approved university.
• Adequate capacity in written and spoken English. For those whose first language is not English, evidence of this capacity is required. Applicants should reach at least level 6.5 in the IELTS or 580 /93 for TOEFL. Please check the University website for more information on English language requirements. 
• Experience in economics and statistics, demonstrated through a good mark received for at least one course at undergraduate level. 
• Applicants must be African nationals. Preference will be given to scholarship candidates living in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Application process
Applications must be received through the University online application system, accessed via www.birmingham.ac.uk by the 19 May 2014. In addition to the normal University requirements for supporting documents, candidates must also upload a 500 word statement and CV. This statement should set out why the applicant is the best candidate for the scholarship. Candidates must also send an email to Mrs Debra Beard (d.l.beard@bham.ac.uk) informing IDD of their wish to be considered for the scholarship. Loughborough University Africa Scholarships 2014-2015

Loughborough University is delighted to announce full-fee scholarships for international full-time taught postgraduate students who are currently living in Africa.

The scholarships will cover 100% of the course fees for your chosen postgraduate taught course for one year.

Application Process and Eligibility Criteria

For 2014 entry the scholarship application procedure is an open competition. Students may only apply for the scholarship after an offer for a place has been made.

The deadline for applications is 30th April 2014.

The selection panel will use the following eligibility criteria when assessing applications:

• Currently domiciled (permanently living) in Africa
• Evidence of exceptional academic achievement (normally a 1st Class Honours Degree)
• Commitment to return to their home country on completion of postgraduate programme
• Evidence of the ability and commitment to making a significant contribution to their home country on their return

Africa – Morland Writing Scholarship

It can be difficult for writers in the early stages of their career to write and to earn a living outside writing at the same time. To help fill this need the MMF has established up to three Morland Writing Scholarships every year. The Scholarships will be open to anyone who has been born in Africa or both of whose parents were born in Africa.

Grant
The Scholars will receive a grant of £18,000, paid monthly over the course of one year.

Scholar’s Undertaking
In return for this the Scholars will agree that 20% of whatever they subsequently receive from what they write during the year of the Scholarship will be paid to the MMF which may be used to support other promising writers and possibly to expand the Scholarship scheme in later years.

Qualifications
To qualify for the Scholarship a candidate must submit a piece of published work, or an excerpt from a piece of published work, of between two and seven thousand words to be evaluated by a panel set up by the MMF which will include MMF trustees and past participants in the Caine Prize. The Scholarships will be awarded based on these submissions although the Foundation may also wish to question certain candidates or ask for other work.

Proposed Work
The candidates will be expected to submit a brief description of the work they intend to write (ideally 200 – 500 words). It should be a new work, not a work in progress. The proposed work must be in English as must all candidacy submissions. Please also tell us in fewer than 100 words something about yourself and your background.

Scholarship Requirement
The only condition imposed on the Scholars during the year of their Scholarship is that they must write. They will be asked to submit by e-mail at least 10,000 new words every month until they have finished their book. The Scholarship will terminate if a Scholar fails to submit the required work on time unless prior authorisation has been received. The Foundation is happy to support fiction or non-fiction but not poetry, plays or screen-plays. The Scholarship is intended for writers who want to write a full-length book of 80,000 words or more.


The closing date for submissions for the first series of Writing Scholarships will be October 31st 2013. The Scholarships will be announced in December 2013 and will run for the whole of calendar 2014. The Trustees reserve the right to vary the terms and requirements of the Scholarships at their discretion.

Georgetown University Full- tuition scholarship - Master in Foreign Service

Starting in fall 2014, the Master of Science in Foreign Service (MSFS) at Georgetown University is offering a full- tuition scholarship for a talented graduate student from sub-Saharan Africa.

MSFS is a two-year, full-time graduate degree program in international affairs. Students will take courses in international relations, international trade, international finance, statistics and analytical tools and history. In addition, students choose an area of concentration such as International Relations and Security, International Development or International Business.

Applicants must have:

• A completed undergraduate degree from an accredited university with a strong academic record.
• Applicants should have professional experience, ideally in a field related to their future professional goals.
• Students have an average of four years of work experience before joining MSFS.
• Special consideration will be given to applicants from: Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa.
