University of London MA Governance Scholarships

The Centre of African Studies offers 3 MSc scholarships to African residents as part of the Governance for Development in Africa Initiative funded by the Mo Ibrahim Foundation.

In order to be considered for funding, applicants must first secure a place for the MSc by applying directly to the SOAS admissions office.

Once the place is secured, the applicants can apply for the scholarship. Candidates will be assessed on academic merit by a panel consisting of SOAS academic members. The assessment of your application will be based on the information in your scholarship application. Selectors will be looking at the following:
  • academic achievement and evidence of critical analytical capabilities;
  • references;
  • supporting statement;
  • evidence of interest in and knowledge of linkages between governance and development

African Peacebuilding Network Research Grant

Request for Proposals for African Peacebuilding Network Research Grants
The African Peacebuilding Network (APN) of the Social Science Research Council (SSRC) invites research grant applications from African researchers, policy analysts, and practitioners working on conflict and peacebuilding issues at universities and research institutions or regional governmental and nongovernmental organizations in Africa.

Support is available for research and analysis on issues such as the following:
  • Root causes of conflict and conflict prevention, mediation, management, resolution, and transformation 
  • Environmental change and conflict 
  • Post-conflict elections, democratization, and governance 
  • The relationship between peacebuilding and state building, including state-society relations and state reconstruction 
  • Transitional justice, reconciliation, and human rights 
  • Economic and financial dimensions of conflict, peacekeeping, and peace support operations 
  • Disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration (DDR) 
  • Security sector reform (SSR) 
  • Media, civil society, and peace 
  • Peace partnerships involving the UN, the AU, Regional Economic Communities (RECs), and civil society 
  • Gender and peacebuilding 
  • Peace education and social change 

Grants are awarded on a competitive, peer-reviewed basis and are intended to support six months of field-based research, from May to November 2014. Up to ten individual grants of a maximum of $15,000 will be awarded.

Eligibility

All applicants must be African citizens currently residing in an African country.

Academic applicants must hold a faculty or research position at an African university or research organization and have a PhD.

Policy analysts and practitioner applicants must be based in Africa at a regional or subregional institution, a government agency, or a nongovernmental, media, or civil society organization and have at least an MA with no less than five years of research-related or work experience.

Mo Ibrahim Foundation MSc scholarship in Governance and State-building

The University of Birmingham is pleased to announce an exciting opportunity to undertake the MSc in Governance and State-building, followed by a six-month internship at the International Development Department and six months with the Mo Ibrahim Foundation in London with a full scholarship.
The entry requirements consist of:
  • 1st class Honours degree or equivalent from an approved university.
  • Adequate capacity in written and spoken English. For those whose first language is not English, evidence of this capacity is required. Applicants should reach at least level 6.5 in the IELTS or 580 /93 for TOEFL. Please check the University website for more information on English language requirements. 
  • Experience in economics and statistics, demonstrated through a good mark received for at least one course at undergraduate level. 
  • Applicants must be African nationals. Preference will be given to scholarship candidates living in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Application process
Applications must be received through the University online application system, accessed via www.birmingham.ac.uk by the 19 May 2014. In addition to the normal University requirements for supporting documents, candidates must also upload a 500 word statement and CV. This statement should set out why the applicant is the best candidate for the scholarship. Candidates must also send an email to Mrs Debra Beard (d.l.beard@bham.ac.uk) informing IDD of their wish to be considered for the scholarship. Please include ‘Mo Ibrahim Scholarship’ in the subject line of the email.

The scholarship includes:
  • Full tuition fee

Loughborough University Africa Scholarships 2014-2015

Loughborough University is delighted to announce full-fee scholarships for international full-time taught postgraduate students who are currently living in Africa.

The scholarships will cover 100% of the course fees for your chosen postgraduate taught course for one year.

Application Process and Eligibility Criteria

For 2014 entry the scholarship application procedure is an open competition. Students may only apply for the scholarship after an offer for a place has been made.

The deadline for applications is 30th April 2014.

The selection panel will use the following eligibility criteria when assessing applications:
  • Currently domiciled (permanently living) in Africa
  • Evidence of exceptional academic achievement (normally a 1st Class Honours Degree)
  • Commitment to return to their home country on completion of postgraduate programme
  • Evidence of the ability and commitment to making a significant contribution to their home country on their return
